1 Introduction

This document provides information on select issues discovered in the released versions of OpenCore and provides workarounds whenever possible. This document is updated after OpenCore is released and is thus not contained in the binary packages.

This document contains issues considered causing significant impact on the end-user. More details on all known issues including feature requests and development version issues can be found at Acidanthera Bugtracker.

  Description:

  Boot picker menu may not show when upgrading macOS with the following error:

  OCUI: Entry kind 16 unsupported for Icon

  • Add run-efi-updater variable with NO string value OR
  • Avoid using OpenCanopy OR
  • Disable showing picker by setting ShowPicker to false OR

  Description:

  Incorrect operating system may be selected as the default during macOS upgrade when Windows and macOS are installed on the same disk. Reference: acidanthera/bugtracker#948.

  • Update to master version

  Description:

  Description:

  Driver injection into kernel collections normally used in macOS 11, and required for macOS 11 installer, is unsupported.

  Possible workarounds:

  • For preview version of KernelCollection injection code please update to commit d8ace476 and make sure that variables forcing legacy kernel loading (booter-fileset-kernel and booter-fileset-basesystem) are deleted from NVRAM.
  • For preinstalled versions of macOS 11 add NVRAM variable
    7C436110-AB2A-4BBB-A880-FE41995C9F82:booter-fileset-kernel with 00 value; for some EfiBoot variants it may also be required to set booter-fileset-basesystem variable with 00 value.

  Description:

  OSXSAVE CPUID feature may not be reported to macOS release kernels when emulating the CPUID causing crashes of select programs relying on Hypervisor.framework like Docker. Reference: acidanthera/bugtracker#1035.

  Description:

  APFS-formatted macOS Recovery (e.g. Big Sur Recovery) will not load with a boot failure error. Reference: acidanthera/bugtracker#1078.

  Description:

  APFS-formatted drives previously made available with ApfsImageLoader.efi driver are no longer visible with OpenCore builtin EnableJumpstart APFS functionality on platforms that need UnblockFsConnect quirk. Reference: acidanthera/bugtracker#1128.

  • Update to master version OR
  • Disable ConnectDrivers and enable GlobalConnect (may cause performance and compatibility issues depending on the driver use)

  Description:

  Booting Big Sur beta 10 or newer will cause a kernel panic in apfs.kext with the Rooting from the live fs of a sealed volume is not allowed on a RELEASE build message. Reference: acidanthera/bugtracker#1235.

  Possible workarounds:

  • Update to master version OR
  • Set SecureBootModel to Disabled

  Note: On virtual machines ForceSecureBootScheme will also need to be enabled if SecureBootModel is different from x86legacy or Disabled.

  Description:

  Description:

  Description:

  Some released versions of Linux kernel 6.7 and release candidates of 6.8 fail to load when using OpenDuet. This has been acccepted as a bug in the Linux kernel, for which a fix will be released in 6.8 and backported to 6.7. Reference: acidanthera/bugtracker#2371.

  Possible workarounds:

  • Use OpenDuet 0.8.7 or earlier, or wait for fixed Linux kernels to be released.

  Description:

  ocvalidate may report that OpenVariableRuntimeDxe.efi is incompatible with FirmwareSettingsEntry.efi even when FirmwareSettingsEntry.efi is not included and active in config.plist Drivers section. Reference: acidanthera/bugtracker#2379.

  Possible workarounds:

  • For 0.9.8 use version of ocvalidate provided in a comment on the above issue.
